Man Dies After Boat Capsizes in Bellingham Bay on the Fourth of July

A 49-year-old man died July 4 when his vessel capsized in Bellingham Bay. Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound received a call around 6 p.m., diverted a Response Boat crew from Station Bellingham, and the Bellingham Fire Department also responded.
Crew members temporarily righted the capsized vessel and recovered the man from the water. Responders performed CPR and transported him to Coast Guard Station Bellingham, where emergency medical services pronounced him dead. Conditions at the time of the incident included 11 mph winds from the south, 1-foot waves, and a water temperature of 51 degrees.
"Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends and loved ones of the man who was lost in this tragic incident," said Lt. William Trumper, commanding officer of Coast Guard Station Bellingham. The Whatcom County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the cause of death. Our thoughts are with the man's family. Full details here, including boating safety information for Bellingham Bay.

House Fire in the Columbia Neighborhood Destroys Two Garages and Damages a Home

Bellingham firefighters were called Monday at 1:26 p.m. to the 3000 block of Walnut Street in the Columbia neighborhood, where a garage fire had already spread to the main home and an adjacent garage.
Crews put out the blaze before it spread further. All occupants were accounted for, though one resident sustained a minor injury. Both detached garages were destroyed and the main home sustained heavy damage. The fire is believed to have started in a wood-burning stove in the garage. Full story here, including wood stove safety tips.

Heads Up: Lake Padden's Samish Way Entrance Is Closed Today and Tomorrow

The Samish Way entrance to Lake Padden Park and part of the adjacent parking lot are closed today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday) while a contractor removes and replaces the asphalt. The schedule is weather-dependent.
The good news: everything else at the park stays open. The dog park, golf course, tennis courts, trails, restrooms, and boat launch are all accessible via the Wilkin Street entrance on the park's east side. Coming from central Bellingham, take I-5 to Exit 252, head east on Samish Way, and turn left on Wilkin Street.
Dog park visitors should note the nearest parking lot is inside the closed area, so arriving early or walking in from a nearby spot will help. For live updates on closure status, check the full closure guide here or the Bellingham Parks Facebook page.

Bellingham Man Sentenced to Over Four Years for Fatal Guide Meridian Shooting

Alan Ramos, 21, was sentenced Tuesday to just over four years in state prison for his role in the October 2025 drive-by shooting on the Guide Meridian that killed Daytin Duronso-Harp, 26. Ramos pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and third-degree assault.
Ramos is the second person sentenced in the case. His brother, Royelio Marquez, 19, was sentenced earlier this year to seven months in prison for rendering criminal assistance after the shooting. Ramos will also serve an additional year and a half of community custody after release. Full case background and sentencing details here.

Bellingham's Incinerators Are Getting a $40 Million Upgrade. What Comes After Is Still Being Debated.

Bellingham is moving forward with a $40 million upgrade to the aging incinerators at Post Point Wastewater Treatment Plant, following a 2024 air quality violation settlement. Construction is expected to run from 2027 to 2030.
Environmental advocates at RE Sources say that timeline is too slow. The organization delivered a 1,300-signature petition to the City Council in April calling on the city to skip the upgrade and move directly to gasification technology, which processes sewage sludge in a low-oxygen environment and is claimed to destroy PFAS compounds more completely than combustion. City staff toured a gasification plant in Bethel, Pennsylvania in May, but raised concerns about permitting timelines for a first-of-kind facility in Washington.
Public Works Director Joel Pfundt has said moving away from incineration is the goal. The question is when. Community meetings are expected before any long-term technology decision is made. The full breakdown is here, including what gasification is, why advocates want it faster, and what the city's current timeline looks like.
