Little Squalicum Pier Is Open + Your Monday Bellingham Update

Is Spring here?

⛅ Today's Weather: Rain is likely this morning, tapering off through the afternoon. Expect a high near 56°F with south-southwest winds around 6 to 9 mph. Keep the umbrella handy. Full forecast from the National Weather Service.

Happy Monday, Bellingham. It is April 13 and we have a good one for you before the week gets rolling. Spring is here, rain and all, and there is plenty going on around Whatcom County.

Little Squalicum Beach Is Worth the Trip This Spring

If you have not made it out to Little Squalicum Beach yet this spring, now is a good time. The 24-acre park along Marine Drive at Lindbergh Avenue sits in Bellingham's northwest corner, and it has become one of the city's most worthwhile outdoor stops since the new Little Squalicum Pier opened last April.

At 1,248 feet, the pier is the longest public pier in Washington state and on the West Coast between White Rock, B.C., and Pacifica, California. The surface is flat concrete grating with full railings on both sides. No stairs required to reach the deck, though there is a slight incline on the trail approaching the entrance. Fishing and wildlife watching are both permitted.

April is also one of the better months for bird watching at the park. The combination of tidal shoreline, Little Squalicum Creek habitat, and open bay views draws shorebirds, waterfowl, and raptors during spring migration.

The park also has a designated off-leash dog area and trail connections to the broader Bay to Baker trail network. At low tide, the beach connects east to Squalicum Beach, a Port of Bellingham property accessible from a small lot near the end of Seaview Avenue. Both parks are free to visit.

One heads up: Maritime Heritage Park currently has a trail closure for erosion repair. If your loop takes you through there, plan around it. The park is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Full trail and park info is available through the City of Bellingham's parks department. More about the beach and pier right here.

Home Sweet Bellingham

Northwest Bellingham: A Neighborhood Worth a Second Look

Little Squalicum is not just a park destination. The area along Marine Drive and the northwest corner of Bellingham has been quietly drawing attention from buyers who want Bellingham access without the Fairhaven or Barkley price premiums.

The neighborhood sits close to the water, the trail system, and Squalicum Harbor without being in the thick of downtown. Homes here tend to be a mix of older ranches and modest two-stories, with occasional newer builds or renovated properties showing up as inventory turns over.

Here is one home listed on the market right now. A fully rebuilt Hindman Construction home at Little Squalicum Beach just hit the Bellingham market — 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1,000 square feet of efficient living space stripped to the studs and rebuilt to 2025 energy standards, complete with upgraded insulation, air sealing, soundproofing, custom cabinetry, quartz countertops, solid core doors, Gaia luxury vinyl plank flooring (50-year warranty), new HVAC with air conditioning, and cove heaters in the bedrooms, all wrapped up with a private fenced yard and covered porch just minutes from downtown, I-5, and the Interurban Trail.
