Bellingham Scoop: Wednesday Morning
Good morning, Bellingham! Let’s kick off the new year with a look at two bittersweet stories that have tugged on my heartstrings as we open 2025. One is a fire at our beloved nonprofit and the other is a goodbye to a long-time favorite eatery: Pepper Sisters.
First, here’s what’s happening today and this week:
Today’s Events:
Padden Polar Dip: Start your year with a refreshing (read: freezing!) dip at Lake Padden at 11 a.m. Event info.
Polar Bear Plunge at Birch Bay: Take a midday plunge into 2025 at noon. Details here.
This Week’s Events:
Bellingham Farmers Market (Jan 6): The first market of the year kicks off this Saturday at Depot Market Square from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
January Wellness Walk (Jan 4): Stroll through Whatcom Falls Park and meet fellow locals. Starts at 10 a.m.
Now, here’s the scoop:
Fire at Ragfinery
On the morning of December 29, a fire at Ragfinery, Bellingham’s much-loved textile thrift and upcycling shop, caused significant damage to the building. While no one was hurt, the organization, known for its sustainability efforts and job training programs, is now facing an uphill battle to recover.
The fire resulted in extensive smoke and water damage, temporarily shuttering operations. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. In the meantime, many in the community are asking how they can help. Keep an eye on Ragfinery’s social channels for updates and ways to contribute to their recovery efforts.

Pepper Sisters Closing Its Doors

After an incredible 35-year run, Pepper Sisters, the iconic Southwest-inspired restaurant on State Street, is closing. Owner Debbie Dodd announced the bittersweet news last week, citing a desire to retire and spend more time with family.
For decades, Pepper Sisters has been the go-to spot for New Mexico flavors—think tamales, blue corn enchiladas, and that irresistible green chile sauce. The restaurant’s final service will be on January 7, so if you’re craving one last plate of posole, now’s your chance!
Our full story on this closing is here: https://www.bellinghamscoop.com/p/biz-news-pepper-sisters-closing
This marks the end of an era for Bellingham’s dining scene, but Debbie says she’s grateful for the years of support from locals and visitors alike.
